I had an English study group yesterday. We are using the textbook, 'Grammar In Use'.
But mine is the British version and other's are the American version.

In my textbook, there are written 'what do you usually do at the weekend?' and 'what do you usually do at weekends?'
And in the other's textbook, there are written 'what do you usually do on a weekend? and 'what do you usually do on weekends?'

Are there any tiny differences among the four sentences? And one of the member said, 'At the weekend' and 'At weekends' are not informal expressions. The things she said is right? The last question is then which one would be more commonly used in real life?

  • Hello Joohee - all the expressions are correct English. However this question would generally be asked in an informal setting and native english speakers would be inclined to say: "What do you like to do with your weekends?" or "what do you usually like to do at the weekend?" these are general question relating to weekend activities in a conversational setting.

  • Hello!

To answer your question, if you want to sound more natural with your english it would be better to say "What do you usually do on the weekends?" Or "What do you usually do on the weekend?" To say "at the weekend" would not be correct.

  • Dear Joohee. All are correct expressions. The difference is American English or British English. In British English we would always say 'what do you usually do AT the weekends'. However in American English they use 'on the weekends' or one of the other expressions Lynda Hull mentioned.

So it depends if you are talking to a British or American speaker.

In America, it is more natural to ask "What do you usually do on a weekend?" or
What do you usually do on weekends?" I have never heard anyone ask using the
at the weekend" or "At weekends", however, that may still be more common in Britain. Still, the small differences of either using "at the" or "on the" don't change the meaning of the questions. You can ask either way and people will still understand exactly what you mean. I hope this helps.

주히 안녕.
Actually , if we analyze the expression technically:
Saying "what do you do AT weekends" is grammatically incorrect, however it is accepted in England as a proper form because prepositions are idiomatic, which means it depends on each country how they are used.

In fact the English actually use both expressions. but I suggest you use "what do you do ON weekends". regardless of the country, because it is the proper way of saying it and it also sounds better.

To give you another example, you don't say "what are you doing at Sunday" you say "what are you doing ON Sunday".

이해해요?
그럼 항상, "at" 아니예요, ON 맞아요.
